Snap Mode will be an integral usability function to the new Xbox One, Microsoft has revealed. Appearing to be an evolution of hands-free Kinect control, Snap Mode allows instant, simultaneous use and switching of multiple apps, channels and media on the same screen.
The example used to showcase the facility (amid a presentation of the Xbox One's ability to instantly switch its feed between games, live TV and media apps upon voice command) showed the first Star Trek movie being watched as an in-picture Internet Explorer browser was pulled up via voice command to research the film's sequel. Motion-controlled hand gestures look to be able to quickly handle further editing of the screen display. Snap mode essentially appears to provide the experience of consuming on-TV media with smartphone in hand, only without the need for the smart phone.
Microsoft is pitching the Xbox One as an instant, all-in-one, streamlined media box, and Snap Mode certainly looks to be at the core of that aim.
