World of Tanks pays players to change passwords after breach

Email and encrypted password information may have been compromised in a World of Tanks security breach. The news is irritatingly common for online games, but developer Wargaming.net is using a novel approach to make sure players secure their profiles: a reward of in-game currency.

Players who update their passwords will receive a one-time payment of 300 gold. Not a bad way to get the player base of a free-to-play game moving, but c'mon, your internet privacy is worth at least 500 gold.

Wargaming said no financial information was accessed in the attack, so don't worry about canceling credit cards. But, as per usual, if you used the same email address/password combo elsewhere, it would be best to change it across the board.

I got a BA in journalism from Central Michigan University - though the best education I received there was from CM Life, its student-run newspaper. Long before that, I started pursuing my degree in video games by bugging my older brother to let me play Zelda on the Super Nintendo. I've previously been a news intern for GameSpot, a news writer for CVG, and now I'm a staff writer here at GamesRadar.
