Wolverine's X-Men: Apocalypse cameo is "the birth of a new direction" says Bryan Singer
One of the best moments from yesterday's X-Men: Apocalypse trailer is the short reveal tagged onto the end. As two of the team's newest recruits stand in a room full of dazed bodies, Cyclops 'fesses up that they had some help. Cut to: a badass shot of those adamantium claws. It confirmed a rumor that's been circulating since the movie was first announced - Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is indeed back.
What we still don't know is to what extent he'll be involved. It makes sense that it'd be a small cameo, possibly leading into Wolvie's next solo movie, but according to Bryan Singer it might be more complex than fan service. “Make of that what you want,” he tells Empire. “I will say, it’s not simple. There’s something more pivotal that occurs with that. It hints to a sequence that again fits within the canon of all six movies, and the birth of a new direction. It’s not insignificant, nor is it simply just a throw-in… It’s not the only shot you’re gonna see, let’s put it that way.”
When we last saw him, the 'past' version of Wolvie was still in possession of his old-school bone claws. As Days of Future Past hit the reset button on practically the whole series, it might mean we get to see him enter the Weapon X program all over again, in order to get the adamantium upgrade. Or maybe not. Perhaps the "pivotal" thing Singer mentions is a change to Wolverine's origin. Either way, it looks like we'll see more of him than just a quick First Class-style appearance.
Directed by Bryan Singer and starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Lawrence, Olivia Munn, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Rose Byrne, Nicholas Hoult, and Hugh Jackman, X-Men: Apocalypse will now be released in UK cinemas on May 18, 2016 before making its way to US theatres on May 27, 2016.
