Views to an Assassin's Creed kill

Wednesday 23 August 2006
The latest images from PS3's brutal, sun-bleached medieval stealth action title show off its novel take on stealth - emphasising blending into the crowd rather than hugging walls and slinking in shadows. Although leaping from rooftop to rooftop and skewering unfortunate Crusaders in sudden sword-fights works too. This is, after all, from Ubisoft, the creator of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. See the images tab above for more energetic shenanigans.

While moving through the crowded streets of Jerusalem (and later other Holy Land locations, including Acre and Damascus), shoulder-button action modifiers allow hero Altair to either blend in or push out from his surroundings.

As the screen below shows, keeping pace with a crowd of monks and taking the low profile approach allows him to walk in plain view of his target - alternately, taking the heavy approach would roughly shoulder the monks aside for a frontal assault.

Above: Spot the assassin! OK, he's the one with the crossbow quiver and spring-loaded wrist-blade, but play along

Assassin's Creed remains one of the most interesting titles of 2007, not least because of the rumours over just how PS3 exclusive it actually is, or indeed over the plot twists of the game itself (you can read our take on the storyline here ). Hopefully it won't be long until Ubisoft gives us a hands-on, knives-out demonstration.
