Now, this is where we get into major spoiler territory for The Umbrella Academy season 4, so turn back now if you're not up to date with the final season and don't want to know what happens!

The season kicks off with the Hargreeves and Lila living (relatively) normal lives without their powers, six years after the showdown at Hotel Oblivion at the end of season 3. Diego and Lila are married with kids and struggling to cope with domestic mundanity, and Lila sneaks out to attend meetings of 'the Keepers,' a conspiracy group who believe in the existence of other timelines. Five also attends these meetings in disguise on behalf of the CIA. Things kick up a notch at the end of episode 1, however, when a man named Sy Grossman asks for the siblings' help in finding his estranged daughter, Jennifer, who hasn't been seen or heard from in three months. He believes that she's got caught up with the Keepers, as he found a box of Umbrella Academy memorabilia in her car – including a jar or marigold. Later, the siblings discuss whether to drink the marigold and regain their powers but decide against it. Ben steals the jar, though, and spikes their drinks. Everyone regains their powers, except newly sober Klaus, who didn't take the shot in the first place.

In episode 2, the gang heads off on a road trip to a small town in Maine in an attempt to locate Jennifer. They're getting reacquainted with their powers, but Five finds that he can't teleport like he used to – he just ends up in the same mysterious subway station every time. When a train pulls into the station, he decides to get on it, and finds himself in a different timeline at the other end. The other siblings split up to look for Jennifer, but it's Ben who inadvertently finds her when he visits the diner she manages. As they try to leave the town, fighting breaks out, and it turns out the whole place is populated with people working for their father. Klaus is caught in the gun fire, and they give him marigold in order to save his life, much to his annoyance. Jennifer reveals that she doesn't know who Sy Grossman is, before their minivan is hit by a car belonging Gene and Jean Thibedeau. They're the leaders of the Keepers, and they want Jennifer too.

In the third episode, we get a flashback to Jennifer's origins via an old news report. Two fishermen are being unterviewed after they found the largest squid ever discovered, when something begins to move inside the creature. When they cut it open, they find that the something in question is actually a young girl (i.e. Jennifer). When asked what happened, she simply says, "the Cleanse," and we see a brief glimpse of Reginald watching everything unfold. Back in the present day, Ben starts to feel a strange connection with Jennifer, while Jennifer wakes up on Gene and Jean's farm. They tell her that they have questions about the Cleanse, and we find out that they want it to happen.

The others visit the Keepers' HQ and find a file labelled 'the Jennifer incident' from the date Umbrella Ben died (the version in season 4 is the Sparrow Academy version of Ben). The siblings realize none of them can remember exactly what happened to him and demand answers from their father, who admits he wiped their memories and built the town in Maine to protect Jennifer. The group demands answers and convinces Reginald to restore their memories. Meanwhile, Ben is increasingly drawn to Jennifer and manages to track her down and help her escape.

Episode 4 begins with a flashback to 2006 and the day Umbrella Ben died. The siblings are sent on a mission to locate and destroy a mysterious weapon, and are told they must keep it contained at all costs. Ben disobeys their orders when he hears something inside the container and discovers Jennifer. When he touches her, there's a pulse of energy, and Reginald kills them both. That's because there's a particle in Jennifer called durango that, when it reacts with the marigold particle in the Hargreeves, causes an apocalyptic event called the Cleanse. Lila wants to go back in time to stop the original Jennifer incident, so her and Five set out on the mysterious subway network, but can't seem to find their way. Meanwhile, Ben and Jennifer have sex, and the Cleanse begins.

In episode 5, Lila and Five are still searching for the right timeline – and continue searching for almost seven years. The pair eventually give up on finding their way home and start a new life together, and romance starts to bloom – until Lila discovers that Five knew how to get back and was keeping it from her. Back in the present day, things aren't looking good for Jennifer as the Cleanse looms ever closer.

The season finale sees the Cleanse begin in full force, as the Hargreeves go up against the Keepers to try to save Ben and Jennifer before the world ends. It soon becomes clear, however, that they're the problem, and they can't save the world and themselves.
