20 of TV's most loveable rogues

Nice guys always finish last

Forget squeaky clean superheroes, its all about the afflicted anti-hero. Whether its plotting a murder, pulling a prank or popping pills, tormented and troubled has never looked so good and our favourite TV shows wouldn't be the same without them. Love them or loath them; vampires, criminals, gangsters and even a cartoon character have all made it onto our list of TVs most loveable rogues.

20. Bart Simpson (The Simpsons)

Adept in the art of skipping school and teasing little sister Lisa, mischievous Bart Simpson takes poll position as the cartoon worlds most loveable rogue. He drives his oafish father Homer Simpson crazy and the pair go at it in almost every single episode. Principle Skinner has no time for his misbehaviour and a mentally unstable Sideshow Bob even wants him dead. But behind the bravado Bart is a likeable character, who hangs out with nerd Millhouse and loves his mum Marge. Hes a good boy really.

19. Nucky Thompson (Boardwalk Empire)

Machiavellian politician Nucky Thompson, played by Steve Buscemi, has New Jersey in a permanent chokehold. He plays a corrupt role in ruling the city with his credentials as a bona fide gangster. However, his hard hitting tactics are hidden behind a polished demeanour which the people of New Jersey love. Nuckys merciless charm gives depth to his character which makes him all the more appealing to watch.

18. Hannibal Lector (Hannibal)

Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen earned his bad guy stripes squaring off with Daniel Craig at the poker table in Casino Royale. He continues to scare in the TV version of Silence of the Lambs, replacing Anthony Hopkins as infamous cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Despite his hunger for human brains, the man-eating mastermind is hired by the FBI for his expert psychiatric knowledge, making Hannibals monstrous intelligence incredibly captivating.

17. Jax Teller (Sons of Anarchy)

Riding in at number 17 is the President of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Jax Teller. He's a tall, blonde and handsome biker with a criminal record and a tense family history, which is further strained when he comes to blows with his step dad over the clubs direction. Brit actor Charlie Hunnam who pulled out of playing Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey is utterly irresistible as the leather clad bad boy looking for more meaning in his life.

16. Sue Sylvester (Glee)

Sue Sylvester, played by Jane Lynch, paces the halls of the William McKinley High School looking for students to verbally torture. The sharp tongued gym teacher brings a bitter (but delightful) taste to the shows bubble gum centre, and her bitchy rivalry with Matthew Morrisons Will Schuester adds to the fun and games. In 2011 Lynch bagged a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress, proving we're not the only ones who dig this TV rogue.

15. Dr. Gregory House (House)

Dr. Gregory House is a patronising medical genius with a distain for everything in life. After suffering a blood clot while playing golf, he's left living with constant pain and deals with it by rubbing his intellect and superiority in everyone's faces with his controversial patient diagnoses. Brit actor Hugh Laurie adopts a convincing American accent and delivers his lines with dry wit and sarcasm, which we can't help but revel in. A true English talent.

14. Hank Moody (Californication)

Sex addict and drug user Hank Moody struggles to deal with his crumbling relationships and cant make a decision to save his life. The self-loathing writer and his California existence are initially painted as superficial, but during each episode his many layers are revealed one by one. The realness of Hanks character makes him instantly identifiable, so its hard not to empathise with his afflictions.

13. Eric Northman (True Blood)

Alexander Skarsgrds Eric Northman is introduced as a menacing monster who sinks his teeth into humans without hesitation. However, after a brief bout of memory loss the devilishly handsome vamp is united with telepathic waitress Sookie, who falls for his newfound soulful side. The show might kick off with Sookie getting all hot and heavy with her first love (and vampire) Bill, but by season 4 she's sharing a bed with the Scandinavian blood sucker, much to the excitement of fans.

12. Walter White (Breaking Bad)

When teacher Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, is diagnosed with cancer he ditches the school chem lab for something a lot more controversial; cooking the purest crystal meth in all of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Former student, Aaron Pauls Jesse Pinkman, joins Walter in five seasons of climactic character driven plotlines. Walters transformation from geeky school teacher to drug dealing bad-ass Heisenberg is thrilling to watch. Fans are poised for Breaking Bad's return, with filming for season 6 starting next year.
