Trailer for new Japanese Godzilla movie stomps it old school

While Hollywood is plotting a sequel to the Godzilla reboot along with a King Kong crossover, the Japanese production company that started it all is about to unleash a brand new take on the iconic kaiju. Entitled Godzilla: Resurgence, the movie is Toho's first 'zilla film since 2004. Judging by its first full-length trailer it appears to be the polar opposite to its recent Westernized counterpart. Check it out below:

Unlike Gareth Edwards' 2014 blockbuster spectacle this looks like a real homecoming for the beastie. Directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi aren't going for flashy CGI, instead choosing to take Godzilla back to his roots. All the charms of his rubber-suited origins are front and center in this nifty tease as the towering monster stomps his way through a crowded city, hordes of screaming people trying their best to avoid his t(r)ail of destruction. It's massive!

Paying respect to a well-loved character is the order of the day here - he's clearly modelled after the original version. And while Godzilla strikes a similar pose to earlier incarnations - with those tiny T-rex-style arms - he's still been given some upgrades. Namely, a mouth crammed full of jagged teeth and a really quite evil look on his face. I wouldn't mind seeing this guy go up against Edwards' Godzilla. Just sayin'.

Directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, Godzilla: Resurgence arrives in Japan on July 29, 2016. US and UK release dates have yet to be announced.
