Tomb Raider: Anniversary confirmed

The rumor has finally come true, for today publisher Eidos has confirmed that the original Tomb Raider will be remade and renamed as Tomb Raider: Anniversary. And to celebrate this being 10 years since Lara's 1996 debut, the remake will appear on PS2, PC and PSP in, um... 2007.

Being billed as "a completely new gameplay experience," Anniversary will use an enhanced version of the engine beneath Tomb Raider: Legend and promises to do more than merely shove the original title through a prettyfication process. In fact, Kathryn Clements from Eidos gushed: "We've taken all the key moments from the original game and put them into the context of a brand new Tomb Raider adventure."

So while we do know that Lara will again be in pursuit of the Scion and hopefully battle a T-Rex, we don't know if the original puzzles and problems will also undergo the same overhaul. All we do know is that another Eidos employee, Ian Livingstone, has called it "a game that pushes the boundaries of the current gaming consoles. Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a special celebration of Lara's reign as videogaming's leading lady."

Thanks, but we'll form our own opinions when we get to see more of this Crystal Dynamics-developed sequel very soon.
