Oscar-winning King’s Speech director Tom Hooper is seriously considering helming an adaptation of Les Miserables as his next film.
His take on Victor Hugo’s classic story would actually be an adaptation of the long-running stage musical, rather than Hugo’s original tome.
A script by William Nicholson ( Elizabeth: The Golden Age ) and Cameron Mackintosh is already good to go, so it’s just a matter of Hooper signing on the dotted line.
With Hooper apparently in “active negotiations” for the film, his signing would mean he’s favoured Les Mis over a re-telling of Macbeth and an adap of Deborah Moggach’s Tulip Fever.
Les Mis has been running in London as a stage musical for 27 years, and follows a rabble of characters – including a prostitute, factory workers and revolutionaries – as they seek redemption.
