Tom Cruise teases Mission: Impossible, Edge of Tomorrow sequels

Tom Cruise has been talking about the next Mission: Impossible sequel while on a worldwide press tour for what's merely the latest Mission: Impossible sequel. Typically, the series has taken a substantial break between movies, but according to its leading man we could see a sixth instalment in less than two years. “We’re starting to work on it now," he told The Daily Show host Jon Stewart. "We’ll probably start shooting it next summer.”

If that's true then it will be the first MI movie to head into production a year after the release of its predecessor. In all likelihood the fast turnaround could hinge on the success of Rogue Nation, on whether director Christopher McQuarrie is keen to return, or on Cruise's own packed schedule. He's currently shooting Mena with Doug Liman and then heads straight into production on the Jack Reacher sequel.

While Cruise was on the red carpet for the US premiere of Rogue Nation, he also told MTV of his attempts to fire up a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. The underrated sci-fi actioner was scripted by McQuarrie and directed by Liman, who Cruise says he's approached. “I pitched it to McQuarrie and Doug. We were there one night and I was like, I’ve got an idea for it... it could be so much fun,” he said. “Gotta get Emily. I was like Emily, please. She was like, ’give me another year, please.'”

Another year, provided it's not taken up by Mission: Impossible 6.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation opens July 30 in the UK and a day later in the US.
