Tom Cruise jumps aboard Bryan Singer's new thriller
Oh, and it's apparently set in World War Two
If it seems like only a week since we reported on Tom Cruise’s United Artists picking up Bryan Singer’s planned new thriller, that’s, er, because it was only last week.
But now there has been an extra development. Because Cruise wasn’t just shopping for a new film to produce. He was looking for his next lead role following Lions For Lambs.
Also revealed is the fact that the film is set in World War Two, and will be partly based on the real life attempt to assassinate Hitler by German generals. We’re going to throw out a guess here and say Cruise isn’t taking on the Adolf role.
Co-written by Singer’s Usual Suspects scribe Chris McQuarrie alongside Nathan Alexander (his assistant on The Way Of The Gun), the screenplay quickly caught the eye of the Cruiser and his producing/studio honcho partner, Paul Wagner. "After reading the script, Tom and I knew immediately that this was a film we had to make," Wagner gassed to Variety. "As an added bonus, because of Bryan Singer's involvement and Tom's admiration for him as a filmmaker as well as the excellence of the script, the project attracted Tom as an actor. I cannot think of a more perfect combination of creative elements for our second production."
Translation: everybody loves everybody else and they’re all off for ice cream smiles and puppy dog hugs. Oh, and Superman fans shouldn’t worry too much – with a shooting schedule set for summer, Singer still plans to make a Super-sequel once he’s finished with the new thriller. You’ll just have to be more patient.
