A smirking sponge on legs takes his best mate - a purple starfish called Patrick - on a treacherous quest to recover the crown of King Neptune, before the enraged monarch turns SpongeBob's boss, Mr Krab, into shellfish pâte. It's all a fit-up cooked up by a ranting globule of pond-scum called Plankton, who is jealous of Mr Krab's `krab patty' - a sort of submarinal Big Mac that far outsells the slops of seaweed he hawks at his outlet.
The whole thing is like some twisted, cheese-induced dream designed to batter grown-ups into submission, while their beaming offspring skip back into the real world, bleating: "Again! Again!" Mostly, Spongebob Squarepants is happy just to thunder along as an expanded retread of the TV cartoon and although the shouty anarchy feels like a good idea at the time, it's not something you'd want to watch again. Although younger family members may have other ideas.
