If you are expecting a fresh spin on 1992’s Single White Female – and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t, since The Roommate’s plot is virtually identical – then you’ll be bitterly disappointed with this tame, tepid, stalker-chick flick.

Gossip Girl’s breathlessly beautiful Leighton Meester plays a misfit college freshman who’s got an unhealthy obsession with her popular new roommate (Minka Kelly). When her ill-starred love goes unrequited, she takes the crazy up a notch.

This premise would normally lead to all sorts of exploitation movie mayhem, but in the hands of Danish director Christian E Christiansen, it becomes a bloodless, charmless bore.

Cat lovers may be unnerved, but fright fans will just yawn their way to the exit.
