Talk about going from one extreme to the other. German director Tom Tykwer is best known for Run Lola Run - a frantically paced, relentlessly exciting, sub-80-minute crime flick starring Franka Potente. Well, Tykwer's follow-up, The Princess And The Warrior may (sorta) be another crime movie which stars Potente, but in every other way it's the polar opposite of its predecessor: plodding, dull and too long.
Potente plays Sissi, a shy psychiatric hospital nurse who meets soldier-turned-bank heister Bodo (Fürmann) when he saves her life after she's run over by a lorry. Obsessed with the idea that he rescued her for a reason, Sissi seeks out her mysterious saviour, convinced that they now share a destiny.
It starts out well enough, and Tykwer treats you to a few flashes of what made Lola so effective, but come the eventual, painfully laboured finale, you'll be feeling like Tykwer's stolen half your day for no good reason.
