After Summer Of Sam, his least black movie to date, Spike Lee's back on the offensive against racial stereotyping, so you can see the appeal in immortalising the hugely successful Original Kings Of Comedy tour - "a labour of love aimed squarely at black audiences."
Filmed using a camcorder, it's the jokes, not the production values, that do the talking, but the appeal was bound to be specialised. Much of the humour derives from the black American experience; gags about gospel, rap shows and US racial stereotypes don't necessarily translate to a wider audience.
It's a worthwhile artefact and a hoot when you get the references but, compared to the magnetic ferocity of Chris Rock, not quite crossover material.
