The multiple narratives of Spellforce III: Reforced

RTS-RPG hybrid Spellforce III: Reforced isn’t just about building armies and razing enemy bases to the ground. It’s definitely a bit about that, but there’s also a rich storyline that’s told from the perspectives of humans, elves, orcs and trolls. As you explore the ancient fantasy kingdom of Eo in the game’s original Burning Blood Campaign, and also the Fallen God and Soul Harvest expansion campaigns also featuring in the new Reforced edition, you’re drawn into a world of magical plagues, shattered alliances and dramatic confrontations that can only be solved by – yes – building massive armies and razing enemy bases to the ground.

This original Spellforce III campaign serves as a prequel to the events of the Spellforce franchise’s first title, Spellforce: The Order of the Dawn, and contains new content exclusive to the Reforced edition. As the name suggests, the Bloodburn plague takes centre stage in the narrative here. Embarking on a quest for a cure and for answers, Corporal Tahar and his party encounter the Purity of Light cult and its mission to rid the world of magic, journeying to Liannon to discover that the Bloodburn plague is itself magical.

In order to find a cure, Tahar and his party must escape imprisonment from Liannon after killing a vengeful brother in self-defense, and must encourage an alliance between human, elven and orcish races. If that wasn’t a packed to-do list on its own, Tahar’s also contending with the effects of his evil mage father Isamo, dead but still wreaking havoc on the world.

This time it’s the kingdom of Nortander’s time to take centre stage in the third of Spellforce III: Reforced’s campaigns, and two years after the events of the main game, a lot’s changed. Soul Harvest once again features 20 hours of new campaign content, this time with General Aerev under the player-character’s charge. It’s also a chance to deepen your knowledge of dwarven and dark elven lore with Eo, with dark elf Raith Skaddar joining the party as a major character having appeared as a questgiver in the main game, and dwarven warrior Rerah also under your command.

This time the threat facing the world comes from a dark elven cult of soul-stealers called the Crescent, and no one is safe from them - humans, dwarves, and dark elves are all falling victim. Aerev has a second chance to redeem themselves after having their company wiped out in battle when the Queen tasks them with uncovering the Crescent’s activity. Soul Harvest digs deep into dwarven and dark elven culture, from the infighting and prejudices that threaten them both to shady collectives with sinister agendas.

Fallen God

The Fallen God campaign, originally an expansion, also features in Spellforce III: Reforced and focuses on the troll race over a completely bespoke 20-hour campaign. Fallen God places you in the role of Akrog, the chieftain of the Moonkin tribe, on an all-new continent called Urgath. And you’ll be covering a lot of ground across it, too - with tusk-hunters forcing your tribe to flee its home, you’re now living as nomadic outcasts, setting up bases wherever possible in the jungles and deserts you wander.

Just as the Bloodburn preys on non-magical humans in Spellforce III: Reforced’s Burning Blood campaign, disease is rife in Urgath too. The very future of your tribe is at stake… until a mysterious elf informs you of a way to resurrect - wait for it - a Fallen God.

Spellforce III: Reforced is available now on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and Steam
