The Minecraft movie's building up to a May 2019 release date

The Minecraft movie will hit theaters on May 24, 2019, according to all-things-Minecraft company Mojang. The cinematic adaptation of the open-world build-and-survive phenomenon is still being directed by Rob McElhenney, best known as the creator and co-star of FXX comedy series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Mojang also confirmed that the movie will be released in both 3D and IMAX formats.

We still know next to nothing about what McElhenney plans to do with the source material, aside from "something strange and wonderful". Previous director Shawn Levy planned to do a Goonies-style adventure adaptation, but Mojang apparently nixed the idea and he left (you can try Telltale's Minecraft: Story Mode if you're still interested in something along those lines).

We still don't know who, if anyone, is working on the script, though Mojang teased both a screenwriter and an official title (Minecraft: The Movie) with this image. Whichever direction McElhenny ends up taking it, at least he has plenty of time to work on the production.
