Another month, another spin-off, this time inspired by the Disney Channel kids' show starring Hilary Duff as an all-American teen. Retaining the basic format - Lizzie's relationship problems are amusingly dissected by her cartoon alter ego - director Jim Fall freshens things up by changing the locale. And where better than Rome, our heroine and her buddy Gordo (Adam Lamberg) embarking on a school trip to the ancient city.
Forget the plot - some dopey doppelgänger nonsense involving a dashing Italian pop star - and you'll probably enjoy this fluffy caper. Not least because Duff's wholesome charm is cleverly offset by sharp comic turns (notably from Alex Borstein as her dictatorial chaperone) and a few lively musical numbers.
Okay, so the limitations of the show's regulars are cruelly exposed on the big screen, while Duff is far too poised and assured to convince as an insecure klutz. But there's still much to like here, and it's definitely superior to the similarly-themed What A Girl Wants.
