Why you can trust 12DOVE
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s death, one of the Polish filmmaker’s most magical and mysterious films gets a re-release.
A radiant Irène Jacob plays the two identical-looking young women, one living in Poland and the other in France, whose lives uncannily correspond. Both are talented musicians, both suffer from heart problems and both have benevolent fathers and deceased mothers.
With its endless doublings, its fascination with objects and mirror-images, its golden-hued cinematography and its sumptuous score, 1991’s self-reflective The Double Life of Véronique makes the familiar seem extraordinary and memorably conjures up the sense of metaphysical forces guiding its characters’ everyday lives.
