There's a lot of treading water in this Icelandic true-life tale about local hero Gulli (an amiably slobbish Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) who was shipwrecked in minus-six-degree seas in 1984.

Hypothermia isn’t usually the stuff of drama (barring Titanic ), yet this CGI-free wave-fest rivets when at sea, losing its way on land.

Still, director Baltasar Kormákur’s flinty style hymns his homeland’s stoicism just as well as his geysers-and-geezers thriller Jar City (2006) did.

It’s all a pretty obvious metaphor for the icy plunge that the Icelandic economy took recently, but is none the worse for it
