To celebrate the release of Studio Ghibli ’s latest animation From Up On Poppy Hill on 2 August, we’re going to have a daily rummage through the Spirited Away studio’s magical history
F is for Forest Spirit
The forest spirit in Princess Mononoke is at once one of the most beautiful and terrifying characters in the Ghbili collection. Representing the God of Life and Death, the forest spirit exists in the form of a deer. Unfortunately the people in the local area, who are responsible for deforestation and mining, believe the head of the forest spirit is believed to grant immortality. SPOILERS: When the forest spirit is beheaded it transforms into the God Of Death, dissolving into a monstrous black ooze to rampage and destroy the remaining forest and everything in its path.
The latest film from Studio Ghilbli, From Up On Poppy Hill , arrives in UK cinemas on 2 August. Featuring the voice talent of Gillian Anderson, Christina Hendricks, Jamie Lee Curtis, Anton Yelchin and Aubrey Plaza and is directed by Goro Miyazaki.
