Nintendo has a lot of work to do if it wants to the 3DS to attract more female gamers. As you can see from this handy chart, the Wii and Nintendo DS seem to be equally popular with both guys and gals. The 3DS, on the other hand, is a bit more of a sausage in comparison. Clearly, nurturing the Nintendo 3DS’ female audience is important, and the best way to grow the pink side of this bar is with, well, more pink.
That’s right! In order to woo more women to its handheld, Nintendo has announced that a pink version of the 3DS will be made available in Japan this October. Officially called Pink Myst, this system will hopefully do what their software library could not: sell the 3DS to women. No US release has been given as of yet, but the impressive sales of the pink DS in America (and the recent announcement of a Metallic Rose DSi XL) make it very likely that it will make its way over to the states.
We’ve reached out to Nintendo PR in the meantime to shed some light on the situation and let us know when the prettier, pinker, and mistier, 3DS will be available outside of Japan. If they don’t arrive before the end of 2011, we suggest releasing the system early in February. That way we can pretend it’s a Valentine’s day gift when we pick it up for ourselves with a dozen roses and a box of chocolate (also for ourselves).
