Arguably one of the most beloved space RPG series of all time is Mass Effect, which originally debuted in 2007, and has generated an immense following of devoted fans. It’s a franchise that captivated an audience almost immediately thanks to its deep progression system, lovable characters, and rich story. Despite the controversy that came with the ending of the third installment, Mass Effect has always been known for its narrative, due in part to the performances and writing. Whether it's the series’ choice-driven dialogue options, its fantastic combat, or its interesting characters - Mass Effect has a lot to love.
Even though it’s one of the best RPGs ever, there aren’t many games that have replicated the Mass Effect formula, and even fewer that do it right. After you’ve finished the main trilogy (yes, even Mass Effect: Andromeda), you might be wondering if there are other games like it. While nothing truly captures the essence of the series in its entirety, there are a slew of games like Mass Effect that will likely scratch that itch.
These are 10 of the best games like Mass Effect to tackle after diving into the Mass Effect Legendary Edition:
Alpha Protocol
Available on: PC, PS3, Xbox 360
Kicking things off is a game that feels very much inspired by Mass Effect in more ways than one. Released in 2010, Alpha Protocol includes many of Mass Effect’s best features, with an engaging dialogue system at the forefront. Your dialogue choices impact your relationships with the characters, and is reminiscent of Mass Effect’s Paragon/Renegade morality system - allowing you to pick “bad” and “good” responses.
But the similarities don’t just stop there. Alpha Protocol is an RPG with cover-based shooting that is very clearly inspired by BioWare’s best entries. Of course, Alpha Protocol is noticeably lower budget than Mass Effect, but if you can get past that, you’ll likely enjoy it.
Prey

One of the sleeper hits of the PS4/Xbox One generation was Prey, a game that has a die-hard community of loyal fans, just like Mass Effect. Prey is interesting because it has a dynamic world that encourages exploration and experimentation with its mechanics. And, much like Mass Effect, Prey features numerous choice-driven scenarios that impact the outcome of the game.
Once again, the story in Prey is excellent, with certain story beats that rival even some of the best films out there. It’s a moody, creepy, space game that will likely make you think. Prey is certainly a lot darker and scarier than Mass Effect, but if you’re looking for something unique, while borrowing some familiar mechanics from other space games, you should absolutely give it a try.
Fallout: New Vegas

While Fallout: New Vegas might not resemble Mass Effect in aesthetics, the two have a lot more in common than you might think. Fallout: New Vegas is arguably a more polished version of the acclaimed Fallout 3, with lots of branching paths, memorable characters, and quests to embark on. If you’re a fan of Mass Effect’s RPG elements, you’ll be right at home with Fallout: New Vegas.
This game allows you to build your character exactly how you’d like, with lots of opportunities for replayability. You won’t save the galaxy in Fallout: New Vegas, but it does offer an engaging story that will likely sink its teeth in you. It’s remarkable how well this game holds up, considering it's a decade old at this point.
Greedfall

Much like other entries on this list, Greedfall is an action RPG that prioritizes player choice. In Greedfall, you’re able to develop relationships with different factions, and the one you side with changes the outcome of the story. In fact, there are multiple endings that are both worth experiencing, so it’s well worth playing through multiple times.
Greedfall differs from Mass Effect in that it focuses more on melee combat instead of shooting, but the action is compelling and will probably keep you engaged. Tying the whole thing together is a story that has its fair share of twists and turns -- perfect for those looking for an interesting narrative.
Destiny 2

Sure, Destiny 2 is a live-service shooter that doesn’t seem to have a lot in common with Mass Effect, but after spending time with both series, the similarities are clear. One thing both share is a satisfying progression system, leaning hard into the RPG mechanics that let you create the character you want.
And of course, Destiny 2 allows you to explore various unique planets -- each with numerous resources to uncover. While the original Destiny was criticized for its narrative, its sequel was much better received in this regard. It’s nowhere near as compelling as Mass Effect, but it’s enjoyable enough to warrant a playthrough, for sure.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Out of all the games on this list, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is one of the most similar games to the Mass Effect series, due in part to its presentation and emphasis on dialogue options. Human Revolution allows you to interact with certain characters, and depending on what you say to them, the overall outcome of the story will change.
But beyond those obvious comparisons, Human Revolution features upgrades that work in a similar fashion to Mass Effect, allowing you to specialize in various skills that enhance combat (and other aspects). Deus Ex: Human Revolution has a fascinating story that might not feel like Mass Effect, but it’s just as engaging, with top-notch acting and writing that gives it an edge.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

The later Assassin’s Creed games doubled down on the RPG systems, giving you more agency over how you build your character. Mass Effect has similar features in place, offering numerous ways to play, and a slew of weapons at your disposal. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is one of the best in the series and is the second entry to truly feel like an RPG (after Origins).
It’s built similarly to Mass Effect, with quests, side-quests, lots of different gear, and even includes dialogue options! The various dialogue selections might not be as impactful as they are in Mass Effect, but they function in a similar way -- making this game a great alternative after you’ve finished Shepard’s adventures.
The Division 2

One thing Mass Effect doesn’t get enough credit for is its cover-based shooting, which was refined in some of the later entries. If that’s one of the things you like about Mass Effect, you might be into The Division 2. Sure, they’re different in setting and style, but both games have solid cover-based shooting that feels oh-so satisfying. While Mass Effect is primarily a single-player adventure, The Division 2 focuses more on multiplayer, with a live-service presentation similar to Destiny 2.
The Division 2 also has its fair share of RPG mechanics, not unlike Mass Effect, which gives you plenty of choice in the way you build your character. You probably won’t fall in love with The Division 2’s characters like you did in Mass Effect, but from a mechanical standpoint, it does a lot of things right and is worth your time, especially if you have friends to play with.
Warframe
Available on: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
Warframe encompasses a lot of Mass Effect’s best features such as third-person shooting, exploration, and a deep progression system. This game is focused more on cooperative play, but it’s reminiscent of Mass Effect thanks to the way it handles its RPG mechanics that allow you to upgrade your character.
It also resembles Mass Effect in its aesthetic style, featuring various planets that feel distinct. Warframe is certainly more geared towards action and combat, but that doesn’t make it any less fun. The best part is that Warframe is free, so there isn’t much of a downside to giving it a try.
The Outer Worlds
Available on: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
The Outer Worlds shares similarities with many beloved franchises, but it’s hard to overlook how much it has in common with Mass Effect, specifically. Most notably, The Outer Wilds sends you to a slew of planets to meet various characters who have a wide range of personalities. Choice is at the heart of this game, much like Mass Effect, so you’ll have plenty of reasons to replay it multiple times.
It’s got a little bit of everything -- action, a witty, lovable cast, and a story that you’ll likely fall in love with. One thing The Outer Worlds does fantastically is the way it encourages exploration, with tons of items and resources hidden around every nook and cranny. This is not one to skip if you have to have more Mass Effect in your life.
