Here’s a riddle for you: What do Super Mario Bros., Pac-Man, Doom, Tetris, Pong and World of Warcraft have in common? Okay, so it’s not much of a riddle if you read the headline to this article; the answer is that they’re all the first inductees into The Strong’s World Video Game Hall of Fame.
Located in Rochester, New York, The Strong is a multi-collection museum, which first opened its doors in 1969 as an education center dedicated to the history and study of play. Alongside the Video Game Hall of Fame, The Strong also features the National Museum of Play, the National Toy Hall of Fame, and The International Center for the History of Electronic Games.
Arguably more interesting (or if not, at least as equally so) are the games which didn’t make the cut. On The Strong’s shortlist: FIFA, Minecraft, The Oregon Trail, Pokemon, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda, Space Invaders and The Sims.
Of course, if you feel the exclusion of these games - or others - is a slight to video game history, you could always submit your own suggestion. Anyone can submit a nomination for the class of 2016 between now and March 31, 2016.
