How to increase your Starfield FOV

You can adjust your Starfield FOV on both Xbox and PC without mods, allowing you to massively increase how much they can see. Xbox players were stuck with the default 85-degree field-of-view prior to the October 9 patch for Starfield, but PC players could adjust their FOV through user-made Starfield mods. Now though, it's an accessibility menu setting available to all, regardless of your platform, so here's how you change your FOV in Starfield.

Recent updates

As of November 9, 2023, the information in this guide is accurate, with Starfield's FOV slider offering a nice option for console players, while PC players can still resort to mods if they still want more out of their field-of-view.

How to change FOV in Starfield

To change your FOV in Starfield, follow these steps:

  1. Open the in-game System menu.
  2. Navigate down to the Settings menu.
  3.  From Settings, open the Accessibility menu.
  4. Adjust the First Person FOV and Third Person FOV sliders to suit your preference, then close the menus to save any changes to your FOV.

The default first person FOV of 85 can be pretty uncomfortable if your gaming setup involves you sitting at a desk close to monitor, so turning up your FOV really helps with that - I've upped mine to 100 degrees and it feels much better. The third person FOV starts at the minimum of 70 degrees but, both first and third person FOVs can be boosted to 110, massively increasing how much you can see at once. Check out the comparisons below.

However, be aware that altering your FOV can also affect the game's performance. On My Xbox Series X, things were a little choppier when running around Jemison at the maximum 110 FOV, but were obviously a bit smoother at the minimum of 70. Xbox players should note that lowering your FOV below the default won't increase your frame rate above 30FPS as Starfield is locked to that rate. Furthermore, higher FOV angles cause your weapons to take up less space on your screen, which can make aiming harder, especially if you sit far from your screen.

Of course, if you want FOVs higher than 110 degrees, you'll need to download a mod that offers such an enhancement. Try grabbing one of the more acclaimed Starfield mods over on NexusMods, courtesy of hellstorm102, and following the instructions on the page to install it. You can also alter the FOV yourself by altering the game files, though using such a mod essentially does this for you.
