StarCraft II player on a mission to reach the diamond league with a “garbage” strategy

Real-time strategy games are supposed to be about strategy, right? But according to Destiny, a well known player in the StarCraft II community, players who want to improve their standing on Blizzard’s ladder system need to master the game’s mechanics before strategy is even considered. To make his point, Destiny has been posting videos of matches where he does nothing but mass produce zerg queens. His goal is to show how a player with a good mastery of StarCraft II’s basic mechanics can earn a spot in the coveted diamond league with little or no thought to complicated strategies or build orders.

Above: Destiny’s mass queen videos suggest that players in lower leagues should focus on improving their mechanics instead of complex strategies. You can follow his progress by visiting hisYouTube channel

According to Destiny, the all queen build is a “garbage†strategy that won’t work against skilled players. But even though Destiny announces his ridiculous strategy to his opponent at the start of every game, he continues to pull in the wins, suffocating his enemy’s base beneath piles of grouchy zerg queens.

“If you’re in a league below Platinum, it’s not because you’re not scouting well, it’s not because you’re not spreading creep, it’s not because you’re using a bad strategy; none of those are the reason. The reason is because your mechanics just aren’t good enough,†explains Destiny in his first ranked match documenting his quest to climb the ladder with an all queen build.

So if you’re looking to improve your StarCraft II skills, maybe it’s time to stop memorizing build orders, counters, and counters to counters. Maybe it’s time to get back to basics and start focusing on managing your resources. Then again, what do we know? We’re stuck in the silver league ourselves and would probably lose to Destiny’s mass queen build, too.
