Star Wars: The Force Awakens is North Americas all-time No. 1 movie

You rarely read about box office records remaining pristinely preserved, so you can probably guess where this story is going. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has chosen Wednesday to break the earnings record for North American theaters - according to Hollywood Reporter it was hovering at $758.2 million on Tuesday, and with an additional day should surpass James Cameron’s Avatar once every last penny is counted.

That’s just a figure of speech, by the way - the people working in the literal box office won’t take kindly to accepting a hefty bag of pennies for your fourth viewing.

Sparking with laser-guided nostalgia upon its opening on December 18 and now dashing past the $760.5 million earned by Avatar, Star Wars: The Force Awakens still has a long way to win over the entire globe.

With around $1.5 billion earned worldwide, Disney’s extravagant Star Wars remix is now in fourth place below the nostalgic movie about dinosaurs, the nostalgic movie about the worst big boat, and Avatar, a movie which we as Planet Earth gave $2.78 billion.

Directed by JJ Abrams and starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out in cinemas now. You probably just watched it.
