Star Wars 8 director confirms that The Last Jedi is singular

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has made his pronouncement and one of the weirdest, geekiest grammar debates ever is settled: The Last Jedi is singular no matter what all the foreign language translations indicate. At least it's singular in his mind, and he should know, right? Johnson made the distinction in an interview with Good Morning, America, after revealing some bemusement at the furor over the question.

"It's so funny, when people started asking that when the title was announced, because I had never even pondered that question. That seems like, to me, the most … Uninteresting [question], I guess?" Johnson said before finally playing along. "Look, in my mind, it's singular."

That leaves the question of who The Last Jedi is, but between what we saw at the end of The Force Awakens and Luke Skywalker's unexpected pronouncement in The Last Jedi's trailer, it seems pretty clear: "I mean they say in The Force Awakens, that he's going to find the last Jedi temple, and Luke's the last Jedi…" Johnson added, which was as close to explicit as he was willing to get.

Why does Luke want to remain as The Last Jedi? That's one of the 10 questions we had after watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi's trailer. For more insight, check out our round-up of news from Star Wars Celebration Orlando 2017.
