Star Trek sequel will film scenes with IMAX cameras

Star Trek 2 will follow the lead of The Dark Knight Rises and film several scenes using IMAX cameras, according to a new statement released by director J.J. Abrams.

Having worked with the technology on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol , Abrams is keen to use it again to bring some of Star Trek 2 ’s more spectacular sequences to life.

“We were so thrilled with the creative results of shooting IMAX for Mission: Impossible that we jumped at the chance to use the format for Star Trek ,” said Abrams. “All expectations were exceeded - the action and resolution is insane at this scale. We cannot wait for audiences to see the crew of the Enterprise in a way they never have before.”

Having seen Prometheus employ jaw-dropping visual wizardry to spectacular effect, it sounds as though Abrams is looking to create a similarly awe-inspiring sci-fi landscape. And while 3D can occasionally come across as gimmicky, there are rarely any complaints surrounding the super high resolution IMAX cameras.

The sequel will regather the original cast (with the notable addition of Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain of the piece) while Damon Lindelof will again be on screenwriting duties alongside Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Star Trek 2 opens in the UK on 17 May 2013.
