Star Trek: Discovery gets first three cast members and a new alien you won't know you recognise

Star Trek: Discovery has revealed its first trio of cast members, representing Starfleet officers from the eponymous ship and beyond. Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Rapp, and Doug Jones will all play prominent roles in the digital series, though we're still waiting to find out who will take on the lead role: an unspecified female lieutenant aboard the Discovery.

You may not know Doug Jones by name, but you've probably seen him underneath several pounds of film-grade silicone as the Pale Man and the Faun in Pan's Labyrinth, as well as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies. CBS says Jones will portray Lt. Saru in Discovery, a Starfleet science officer and member of a previously unseen alien species. Can't wait to see what weirdness they slather all over his face this time!

It sounds like Michelle Yeoh and Anthony Rapp will be boring old humans: Yeoh plays Captain Georgiou, commander of the USS Shenzhou, and Rapp is Lt. Stamets, a science officer specializing in space fungus (no, really, that's what "astromycology" means) aboard the Discovery. So many lieutenants!

Star Trek: Discovery is set to debut in May 2017 after some delays for improved visual effects. The first episode will screen on CBS, though later episodes will be exclusive to CBS All Access in the US and Canada, and will appear on Netflix in the rest of the world.
