Star Trek 2 gets a release date

Production on J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel is set to hit warp speed with Paramount confirming the film will arrive on 17 May 2013.

Not only has the film been granted a release date, but news has also emerged that Star Trek 2 will boldly go where no Star Trek film has gone before… That’s right, it will be presented in 3D.

Whether or not Abrams chooses to film with 3D cameras or add the effect in later remains to be seen, but what we do know is that production on the film is set to begin as soon as 15 January.

Abrams will be co-writing the script with fellow Lost alumnus Damon Lindelof, alongside Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci. Meanwhile, all the key members of the original cast will be returning for round two, including Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

As for the plot, well that remains cloaked in mystery at this stage. Rumour has it that Benicio Del Toro is being lined up to play the villain, although which villain Abrams has in mind remains to be seen. Benicio as Khan, anyone? Let the speculation begin…
