Sony announces decision to screen The Interview in selected cinemas
Sony Pictures has announced that it has reversed its decision to cancel The Interview’s cinematic release, with the film now set to screen in selected US cinemas on Christmas Day.
Having received bomb threats from the hacker group responsible for the cyber-assault on the studio, many key exhibitors had decided against showing the film, leading to the studio pulling the release altogether.
However, after criticism from President Obama and an expressed willingness from scores of independent cinemas to screen the film, the studio is pressing forward with the release after all.
“We have never given up on releasing The Interview and we’re excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Entertainment.
“At the same time, we are continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience… we are proud to make it available to the public and to have stood up to those who attempted to suppress free speech.”
The studio has also re-released a trailer directly addressing the controversy, which you can check out below…
