Dislocation and desperation are the twin linchpins of Brit director Thomas Clay’s Thailand-set slowburner.
Shot in grainy black and white, the fascinating first half zeroes in on the near-silent relationship between obese, Viagra-popping European Tobias (Nicolas Bro) and his pregnant, former stripbar-worker girlfriend (Pimwalee Thampanyasan).
Unlike Clay’s The Great Ecstasy Of Robert Carmichael, sympathy and restraint are favoured over in-your-face shock – though there’s an abrupt gear-switch in the second half, which sees a teen Mafia enforcer sent to bring back his brother’s head.
How the two halves marry up is anyone’s guess, but the mood mesmerises.
