Nintendo has released a six minute Super Mario 3D World video serving as an introduction to some of the title’s new gameplay elements including character abilities and power-ups, and Wii U Gamepad and Miiverse functionality.
Billed by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata as “the next step forward in the new style of Mario 3D action games that we first introduced in Super Mario 3D Land for 3DS", the game features a multiplayer mode supporting four users playing as Mario, Luigi, Toad and Peach, each of whom have their own unique abilities. Luigi, for example, jumps further than the others, while Toad runs faster and Peach glides in mid-air. The game also introduces a range of fresh power ups including Cat Mario, which enables the plumber to perform actions like climbing up walls and scratching enemies with his claws, and cherries, which let players duplicate their characters.
The video features a Japanese voiceover, but that’s easy to look past. Set for release on November 22 in the US and November 29 in Europe and Australia, Super Mario 3D World looks the equal of any PS4 or Xbox One game launching alongside the new consoles next month. In our latest Super Mario 3D World preview, we called the game the lovechild of Super Mario Bros 2 and Mario 3D Land.
