Sometimes it seems like there‘s been a Sgt Rock film in development since the end of World War II, even though he first appeared in 1959. Hollywood has been trying to work out how to bring DC Comics’ grizzled Second World War hero to the big screen for nearly two decades, and now, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog Tinseltown has had a brainwave. And it’s one of those brainwaves only movie executives can have: “Let’s set the film in the future!”
Anybody else having sudden traumatic flashbacks to the time-travelling Biggles movies?
According to Heat Vision, the problem with the franchise is that World War II films aren’t in vogue at the moment, partly because post-9/11 America isn’t so ready to embrace jingoism: “Even this summer’s GI Joe movie dropped the toy’s ‘A Real American Hero’ tagline and made the action team internationally focused,” the article points out.
It’s not clear, though, if Sgt Rock and his team will time travel to the future in the new film, or whether the whole story will just be set in the future from the outset.
