In an exclusive interview in SFX165 Doctor Who Phil Collinson reveals a bit about the two new women in the Doctor’s life.
On Astrid, the character played by Kylie Minogue in the Christmas special, he says: “She loved the show, loved the script and loved the part... Kylie was great at mucking in with everybody else. She did the 12-hour days and standing in grotty warehouses... she had the whole Who experience! [Astrid] and the Doctor bond in a slightly flirty way – they kinda spot each other across the room. They’re thrown together by events and both end up as part of a bunch of survivors of a big accident that befalls the ship.”
Moving onto Catherine Tate, who plays new companion Donna in season four, he says: “She’s very committed to this show and the part, and very protective of that character. People can be quick to tell us how we ought to make this show, but we know what we’re doing. It’s rather an odd thing to do before you’ve seen the end product. Just wait and see the new series and keep an open mind. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.”
You can read the full two-page interview, which includes Collinson speaking about the Sontarans, Bernard Cribbins and Martha's ring (get your mind out of the gutter) in SFX 165, on sale 19 December.
