SFX Spurious Awards

A classic Doctor Who encounter , Nathan Fillion’s crack habit, a massive overbite and more!

PUBLIC INFORMATION FILM OF THE WEEK
Nathan Fillion speaks on behalf of SASS (Swamp Ass Sufferers Society), while, incidentally, shovelling in some product placement for Zachary ( Chuck ) Levi’s Nerd Machine .

OVERBITE OF THE WEEK
And the Yanks say us Limeys have bad teeth. Jackson has the mother of all fur balls in Teen Wolf .

PORTRAITS OF THE WEEK
Illustrator Mike Puncekar has been producing a lavish set of Mario bad guys paintings, that kinda make you wish someone would make another Mario film and hire him as the production designer.

BAD SPIKE IMPRESSION OF THE WEEK
Hmm, a punk vampire? Where have we heard that one before? The weirdest thing about Bill’s ’80s flashback in True Blood , however, was how Stephen Moyer’s mockney accent sounded less convincing than James Marsters’ when Moyer comes from Essex ! And how polite was that moshing at the punk gig?

GIMMICK OF THE WEEK
Forget 3D. This is the future of entertainment. The new comic by Transmetropolitan creator Warren Ellis, SVK (out this week), is about a telepathic detective. But he’s not the only one who can “read” the innermost thoughts of those around him. Because the comic comes with a special UV light – called an SCK device – and if you shine it on the pages, a whole new load of thought bubbles are revealed. Genius. “ SKV was the hardest thing I’ve written in years,” says Ellis. “I think it’s also the best thing I’ve written in a few years. And, without offence to my other collaborators, I’ve known and worked with [artist] Matt Brooker for 20 years, and that means that not only does stuff appear on the page exactly as I imagined it would, but that it’ll also be better than I imagined it.” Yeah, but we’re still waiting for the scratch and sniff Nightcrawler graphic novel (what the hell does Brimstone smell like anyway?).

METHOD ACTING OF THE WEEK
NSFW True Blood ’s Marshall Allman goes a little too far for comfort…

SPEECH OF THE WEEK
It was a stunt that was always destined to happen. It’s just a surprise it took so long. But Sean Kleier does it with such gusto, you have to applaud the guy’s cajones. On 4 July he got out on the streets of New York with a megaphone and re-enacted Bill Pullman’s speech from Independence Day again, and again, and again. And did those New Yorkers rally behind him and kick some alien butt? Nope. They mostly looked puzzled or embarrassed. Aliens, get in there while they’re all confused…

CAKE OF THE WEEK
As presented to Walking Dead star Chandler Riggs.

MASH-UP OF THE WEEK
Star Wars as a Twilight Zone episode…

CLASSICAL MAKEOVER OF THE WEEK
Portal 2 , reimagined as Dali’s “Persistence Of Vision” (courtesy of HYDE AND GEEK A LA TUMBLR ).

RETRO FANTASY OF THE WEEK

INNOVATIONS CATALOGUE POTENTIAL OF THE WEEK
We demand these go on the market NOW!

MENTAL MAP OF THE WEEK
Posted all around Trafalgar Square in advance of the Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part Two world premiere… but can anybody actually work out what the hell it’s telling us?
