Sci-Fi Bargains Of The Week
Steve Ellis uncovers more amazing offers and dynamite deals
Hello and welcome to this week’s SFX Friday bargain round up. Here we are again to tempt you with sci-fi entertainment ideas that won’t break the bank. Except for the one or two that might.
First off we’ll start with a few guilty pleasures; last week our Bloggers wrote about their own sci-fi guilty pleasures and we thought it might be fun to include some of them in this week’s bargains round up. Al Stuart picked a 1980s movie featuring a very young looking, but still bald, Patrick Stuart; Life Force is available on DVD for £3.97 .
Laura McConnell’s choice was the most bodacious Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure . You can get it on DVD for £3.97 . Steven Ellis picked the Resident Evil films, you can get all four in this boxed set for £8.59 from HMV. Our last guilty pleasure is the nippletastic Batman and Robin chosen by Matt Risley . It’s available on DVD for £4.66 , although you can get the Batman Anthology for just £13.99 and that has all the good Batman films in there too, with the exception of Chris Nolan’s efforts.
Next we have a few old films from the ’70s and ’80s. First up Dennis Quaid and Louie Gossett Jr are enemies forced to survive together in the classic sci-fi remake of Hell In The Pacific . Enemy Mine can be yours on DVD for £3.49 . More Dennis Quaid, but this time he’s really, really tiny in Inner Space on DVD for just £2.99 . Next we have Disney’s The Black Hole on DVD for £3.19 . Kirk Douglas and Farrah Fawcett take on crazed robot Hector in Saturn 3 on DVD for £5.47 . Charlton Heston is the Omega Man on Blu-ray for £4.49 and on DVD for £2.99 .
Zombies next, with two films that have the similar premises of radio DJs staying at their desks as the world falls apart around them. Bill Moseley is our DJ in Dead Air , available on DVD for £7.99 .Our second DJ broadcasting despite the end of the world is Stephen McHattie in the gripping Pontypool (which, despite the name, has no place in Wales in Sci-Fi feature) on DVD for £3.89 , or you can pick it up on Blu-ray for £6.99 .
If you still haven’t experienced a flesh-eating zombified Davina McCall versus Big Brother contestants, then Charlie Brooker’s Dead Set mini series can be your on DVD for £4.97 .
A couple of things out on Monday that are available to pre-order which might interest you: the fantastic Game Of Thrones can be ordered from Amazon on DVD for £26 or on Blu-ray for £32 . Steven Soderbergh’s all-star cast virus pandemic Contagion is on DVD for £9.99 or on triple play for £13.99 .

Over to the supermarkets now; Asda this week had the 2011 update of The Three Musketeers for £11 ; a trip into the woods with Tucker And Dale Versus Evil for £5 ; teeny tiny space ships in *batteries not included for £3 ; and Anya from Buffy ’s worst nightmare in The Bunnyman Massacre for £8 . Plus there’s all three Scorpion King films for £18 , yes, there were three of them, who knew? Also still on the shelves at Asda we saw the classic Transformers cartoon DVDs, season one for £5 and season three/four combined, again for £5 .
Asda’s Blu-ray bargains include Source Code for £10 , Splice for £7 and The Last Exorcism again for £7 . Sucker Punch and Deep Blue Sea were £6 each.
Once again Tesco has pretty much the same range as the last few weeks as the “Big Night In” DVD promotion continues. This includes The Adjustment Bureau for £7 and 300, I Am Legend, Blade, The Island and GI Joe for £5 each. We also found The Golden Compass , Mad Max and Piranha 3D again all for £5 each. Finally on the DVD front we saw The Invasion and Watchmen for just £3 each.
No cheap Blu-rays at Tesco, with the exception of the Star Wars: Clone Wars CGI movie for £7 and the Lord Of The Rings trilogy Extended Editions Blu-ray for £40 . We mentioned this at the end of last year and thought it was worth mentioning again because they still have it and we still reckon it’s a damn good buy.
From the forum this week we have Happy Hangman , who spotted a load of sci-fi and other films in his local Poundland including Resident Evil, The Matrix, Matrix Revolutions, X-Men, X-Men, Spider-Man 2, Spielberg’s War Of The Worlds (2-disc), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, The Last King Of Scotland, Music And Lyrics and Nacho Libre . HH also saw The Last Lovecraft and the Forrest J Ackerman documentary Famous Monster . We assume they’re all a pound .
Beaker spotted an X Men 1 & 2, Daredevil and Elektra box set at Play for £1.99 .
This week Midnighter saw more Doctor Who Character Building sets on offer in his local Tesco. The shop has the Dalek Progenitor Room and Dalek/Cyberman/Weeping Angel Army Building sets for £4.75 each. Yet again it looks like this is an in-store only offer. The Character Building Cyberman Conversion Chamber Midnighter found for a tenner last week is down to £9 in Tesco’s toy clearance. There's also the Eleventh Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver for £7.40 , selected Doctor Who figures for £4 and selected Star Wars: Clone Wars figures for £3.50 . Get thee to Tesco!
Silverfox67 found this Stargate: Atlantis boxed set for £48.97 , you can also get the same set on Blu-ray for £54.99 . Mr Fox also spotted Donny Darko on DVD for a paltry £1.79 .
Finally this week, a reminder that this 2 Blu-rays for £10 offer from Amazon is still running. Included in the offer are such films as Constantine, The NeverEnding Story, Hereafter, Contact and 300 . Play has a similar 2 Blu-rays for a tenner offer running, with a very similar selection of titles. Check ’em out; there might be something there that catches your eye.
