Satoru Iwata was universally mourned by his peers in the games industry after his death at age 55 on Saturday. Days later, the funeral for the CEO and president of Nintendo with the "heart of a gamer" hosted more than four thousand business partners, friends, and fans.
Iwata's funeral services were held over two days at a Kyoto temple, with more than 2,600 people lining up to pay their respects on the first day and 1,500 on the second. Some of the mourners carried colorful 3DS systems, a console that Iwata himself first held aloft at Nintendo's E3 2010 press conference, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Iwata planted the seeds of flowers "that will make people around the world smile," Genyo Takeda, general manager of Nintendo's integrated research and development division, said in a eulogy delivered on Friday. Takeda pledged that he and Shigeru Miyamoto, his fellow representative director, will make sure those seeds grow in Iwata's absence.
