Sally Field was not a fan of her role in the Amazing Spider-Man films
Although they were financially successful, there are many who don't look back favourably on the recent Amazing Spider-Man films (especially the sequel), and you can add Sally Field to that list.
The two-time Oscar-winning actress was on The Howard Stern show recently, and she admitted that Marc Webb's Spider-Man films - in which she played the role of Aunt May - were "not especially my kind of movie" before revealing why she signed on in the first place; "My friend Laura Ziskin was the producer, and we knew it would be her last film. And she my first producing partner and she was spectacular."
It's fair to say that Spider-Man films don't really delve into Aunt May's character - she's basically there to "prop up" Spider-Man with a perfectly timed compassionate speech - and Field noted that "not a great deal of thought" went into playing her. "It's really hard to find a three-dimensional character in it, and you work it as much as you can, but you can't put ten pounds of shit in a five-pound bag."
Field's words may sound a little harsh, but she does have some valid points. For the next batch of Spider-Man films, having Aunt May know that her nephew is Spider-Man could lead to some actual character development and would make the relationship much more interesting, not to mention different. We'll see how Marisa Tomei fares in the role when the latest Spider-Man reboot makes its cinematic debut next year.
Directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, and Zendaya, the as yet untitled Spider-Man reboot will swing into cinemas on July 7, 2017.
