Rumor: Next Call of Duty to be set in the future

According to Gamasutra, 'industry sources' have claimed that the next Call of Duty will be set in the future. This news, paired with Activision registering a domain for ‘Call of Duty: Space Warfare’ earlier this year, seems to indicate that our next dose of CoD will have us leaving Earth for the second time (and maybe not dying as quickly as the first), and give us the shiny new laser guns we’ve wanted for so long.

Italso seems that the next entry isunder development by Sledgehammer Games, though what's left of Infinity Ward is also working on something.

Above: Are we doing it right?

It would bean odd move for a franchise that has routinely rooted itself in historical events and realism, but Activision COO Thomas Tippl assures us that the franchise is not even close to running out of steam:

"We have more development resources dedicated to Call of Duty than we've ever had before. We think there's a tremendous amount of appetite for Call of Duty content as well as services. We still have a large geographic expansion opportunity ahead of us. So we are very bullish on the franchise. We believe that the growth opportunity in Call of Duty has never been stronger than what it is today for us, particularly given the strength of our development teams and the consumer excitement and the equity behind the brand or of the metrics that we are looking at reaching our all-time records."

Perhaps Tippl’s optimism is well placed, as the initial scores for the newest installment in the Call of Duty series, Black Ops, are hitting well within the 80 to 90 range on Metacritic.

Above: No one has said there won't be aliens in the next CoD, so we'll just assume there are

If the reports are true, would you look forward to a Call of Duty set in the future? More than one GR editor has expressed interest in a futuristic game which retained CoD's mechanics -tell us what youthinkin the comments.
