Dante Harper has been brought onboard to work on the script for Roland Emmerich's adaptation of Issac Asimov's Foundation .
It'll be no mean feat, as the epic sci-fi series comprises seven volumes, and takes in some pretty weighty themes.
The books see mathematician Hari Seldon working out the future via some exceedingly complex mathematical formulae, and the outcome doesn't look too bright.
In short, he predicts the fall of the Galactic Empire (humans have settled in planets all across the Milky Way), and tries to set up a long-term plan of prevention.
So it's not exactly Star Wars . It'll be intriguing to see if Emmerich includes some explodey bits for his hardcore fans, or if he'll keep all of the impact intellectual.
Harper has written Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, out next year), as well as the intriguing-sounding All You Need Is Kill , a Source Code -esque script about a soldier repeatedly reliving a fatal battle (Doug Liman's attached to that one).
Harper's taking over from Robert Rodat ( Saving Private Ryan ) who has already taken a pass at the script.
Asimov's unique brand of SF was watered down for Will Smith vehicle I, Robot . It'll be interesting to see if it can survive Foundation 's adaptation intact.
