Rare on Replay: as gamers we lose the past too easily

There's nothing quite like dusting off an old console, struggling to work out if it'll actually work with your considerably newer TV and finally letting all those memories and over-sized polygons wash over like a retro rain. Sadly, with modern machines being the powerhouses that they are, dialing back the hardware clock is fast becoming a lost pastime.

In the latest issue of GamesMaster, Rare studio head Craig Duncan says the answer is finding new ways to bring games of the past to new generations without the hassle. Enter Rare Replay (and its cool 500GB installation). "As gamers we do lose the past too easily, and games of previous generations become harder to experience and enjoy," he says. "It’s so simple for me to go and listen to a music track from the ’70s or ’80s, or find a classic film that pushed a genre forward. There are so many pioneering games that still play well today; the production standards and limitations of technology at the time come second to that core gameplay. It’s fascinating to see – showing my kids (who are 12 and 13) what was around in the '80s and '90s that I grew up with was lots of fun, and they’ve really enjoyed games in Rare Replay that were created before they were even born!"
