When Parisian industrialist Stanislas Graff (Yvan Attal) is kidnapped, the ransom quickly follows… but then it emerges Graff has squandered his fortune.
Updating actual ’70s events for the credit crunch era, director Lucas Belvaux (Trilogy) highlights the backlash against Graff’s moral bankruptcy, forcing us to value the worth of a playboy who, as bravely played by Attal, is deeply unlikeable.
Yet the topicality sits at odds with age-old devices: Dirty Harry-style money drops, fingers in the post.
Like Graff, this muted procedural promises more than it can deliver.
