Before its official unveiling, the PS4 Pro was sometimes referred to as the "PS4K" due to its (then-rumored) support of 4K video. And while the console that launched in November 2016 did support 4K in ways such as Netflix and some games, its own Media Player app lacked the compatibility. But no more; a new update means PS4 Pro owners can now play 4K content straight from the Media Player app.
Basically, what this means is that if you own, say, a 4K movie in mp4 file format, you can put that onto a USB drive or home server and play it using the Media Player app. You'll still need a 4K television of course, and this doesn't mean you can pop in a 4K Blu-ray and expect it to work - the disc drive doesn't support them. But digital files (again, in mp4 format) should work just fine.
If you own PlayStation VR, you can even view your 4K media via the virtual reality headset. PS VR's resolution isn't high enough to natively support 4K, but it'll still look better than your standard HD images. So if you've got a camera that can take a 4K, 360-degree photo, you can use Media Player to view it.
You may now start calling your PS4 Pro the PS4K again.
