PS3 Cell chip to super-boost PC gaming?
Computer board-based prototype to be shown next week
The Cell chip that allows your PS3 to pump out those sweet HD graphics has been used as the basis for a new prototype computer board developed by Sony, according to a report fromPC Advisor.
The new “Cell Computing Board” combines the multi-processor Cell with an RSX graphics processor. Exact tech specs are yet to be revealed, but in simple terms, this will sit at the heart of some fire-breathing PCs.
The new chip will be unveiled at the SIGGRAPH show in San Diego which starts on August 7, where Sony says it will demonstrate real-time processing of “4k images,” which are four times the resolution of HDTV. So our shiny new TV is out-of-date already. Start saving.
