Pokemon Red/Blue-themed 3DS and 2DS systems let you party like it's 1996

February 27 is going to be a big day for Pokemon fans: not only does it mark the 20th anniversary of the series' initial launch in Japan, but it also means a slew of special edition consoles, faceplates, events, and the re-release of Pokemon Red, Pokemon Blue, and Pokemon Yellow on the eShop.

If you haven't yet scored a 3DS or have been looking to upgrade to the New 3DS (that's "new" with a capital "N"), a special bundle will contain a New 3DS system with Pokemon Red and Blue pre-installed, one faceplate with the Pokemon Red box art, one faceplate with the Pokemon Blue box art, and a special Home theme.

If you're not one for the fancy 3D effect or clamshell designs, three special 2DS consoles will also be available, each one colored to match the game it comes with. I have to admit, the semi-clear plastic reminds me of my good old Game Boy Color - the nostalgia is strong with this one. There's no official price yet for either the 3DS bundle or special 2DS systems, though it may be useful to know that a plain New 3DS sells for $200, while a plain 2DS sells for $100.

Later this year, you can bring your fancy new handheld and a copy of Pokémon X/Y or Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire to GameStop and receive Darkrai, Genesect, Arceus, and Mew for free. And just think: you won't even need to bring your Game Boy link cable.
