PlanetSide 2 will finally be released on PS4 on June 23, developer Daybreak (formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment) revealed today. Despite its structure as an MMO FPS, it will be entirely free to play, meaning you won’t even need a PlayStation Plus subscription to hop online and start shooting.
For those just catching up, PlanetSide 2 is a first-person shooter on literally record-breaking scale. In the release date announcement post, Daybreak boasted that the game set a Guinness World Record for most players online in a single FPS battle, with 1,158 players in the fray. Players can use tanks, air vehicles, power armor and more as they seek to conquer rival faction territory in a never-ending, intergalactic turf war. A PlanetSide 2 PS4 release has been a long time in the making, as it was announced way back in June 2013 that the game would come to Sony’s then-unreleased console later that year. Two years and multiple beta tests later, it seems the engines are ready to fire.
