Philip Seymour Hoffman dies aged 46

Very sad and shocking news this evening, as it's reported that Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has died at the age of 46.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Seymour Hoffman was found in his New York City Apartment, and that the New York Police Department is investigating the cause of his death.

While there has been no official statement as yet, The New York Post reports that police say he was found in the bathroom with a hypodermic needle in his arm. In 2006, Hoffman publically admitted to US TV show '60 Minutes' that he almost succumbed to substance abuse after graduating from drama school, but managed to get sober through rehab.

Seymour Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his brilliant turn in 2005's biographical movie Capote , received three Oscar nominations as Best Supporting Actor, and most recently starred in A Most Wanted Man and God's Pocket, both of which debuted at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival .

He was set to star in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Parts 1 and 2 .

We'll update with more information as it happens.

We at Total Film are deeply saddened to hear of his death, and our thoughts are with his family and friends. He was a truly great actor, and will be hugely missed.
