Peter Molyneux admits to telling the occasional fib
Lionhead Studio's boss confesses to white lies during BAFTA Fellowship acceptance speech
Peter Molyneux is renowned for making enjoyable games and contributing greatly to the industry. He's also famous for exaggerating the odd game feature and sometimes making shit up as he goes along. During his BAFTA Academy Fellowship acceptance speech at yesterday's ceremony in London, Molyneux used his precious moments on stage to thank his hosts for the prestigious award and apologize (albeit tongue-in-cheekily) for misleading a few media journalists along the way.
"I'd like to thank the press, by the way, for listening to my stuff," said Molyneux. "Sorry - I've slightly over-promised on things on occasion."
Molyneux admitted he's pulled more than one videogame factoid out of his ass to keep press junkets interesting, adding, "I could name at least 10 features in games that I've made up to stop journalists going to sleep and I really apologize to the team for that."
The Lionhead Studios founder finished his speech by acknowledging how lucky he was to have come so far in his career, and pledged to work harder than ever to justify his new fellowship designation.
To hear Molyneux confess tofibbing is refreshing and, in a strange way, endearing. Let's be real; in this industry, embellishing the features and value of a game isn't so much a rogue practice as it is part of the job. Kudos to him for at least being honest about it...even if it's taken him acouple decades to do so.
